Healthy Aging and Longevity

WANT TO LIVE LONGER AND HEALTHIER?

"Aging" refers to the changes that occur over time. Consider what would happen if you could reprogram the "Younger Years" period, from forty to fifty years in length, to a sixty to seventy year program or more. At Gallagher Chiropractic, we have studied the methods of longevity and have healthy aging solutions and programs to allow you to die young, but as old as possible.

Living healthy longer, staying vibrant and youthful beyond the traditional life expectancy has become a passion of our practice. Whether it's intravenous youth stem cell therapy, nervous system health, a longevity diet, nutritional supplements or a prolonged fasting mimicking diet you're looking for to replace your damages cells with younger regenerative cells, we have a program to help you live young until the day you die. By the synergy of using multiple services, we will help you a long full healthy life.

Why We Age

If you understand how we age, it is easier to defy it. There are solutions to slow down our biological clock. First let's understand some of the common causes of aging.

    1. Stem Cell Exhaustion
    2. Intravenous Regenerative Stem Cell Therapy
    3. The Longevity Diet
    4. Prolonged Fasting with a Fasting Mimicking Diet
    5. Whole Body Low Level Light Therapy

1. Stem Cell Exhaustion

Stem cells allow the renewal of cells. They are stored in the body and used when needed. Some cells age and die on a regular basis and need to be replaced. In the case of hematopoietic (blood) stem cells, exhaustion of stem cells can lead to immunodeficiency. The same can happen with muscles, brain, bones…Exhaustion of stem cells is one of the main causes of aging since it prevents cell renewal and leads to the aging of organs.  Further understanding the workings of stem cells is vital for regenerative medicine, yet we already know ways to increase the number of stem cells in our bodies, as well as increasing stem cell proliferation and differentiation. All of which assists us in repairing and rejuvenating dysfunctional cells.

2. Telomeres Shorten

Telomeres are an essential part of human cells that affect how our cells age. Telomeres are the caps at the end of each strand of DNA that protect our chromosomes, like the plastic tips at the end of shoelaces. Without the coating, shoelaces become frayed until they can no longer do their job, just as without telomeres.

Our cells replenish by copying themselves. This happens constantly throughout our lives. Telomeres get shorter each time a cell copies itself, but the important DNA stays intact. Eventually, telomeres get too short to do their job, causing our cells to age and stop functioning properly. Therefore, telomeres act as the aging clock in every cell, and protect our DNA.

Telomere Shortening

Diet, supplements, rest, and an increase in stem cells ultimately all are ways of maintaining or increasing the length of your telomeres and are part of our healthy solutions to aging.

3. DNA Replication

Throughout life our cells get to divide a great number of times. Genetic anomalies can be observed. Those abnormalities mostly happen during DNA replication and can affect important genes, or cause genetic transcription issues. These abnormalities cause the cell to malfunction and can affect the remaining tissue if the cell isn’t eliminated through apoptosis (cellular death) or senescence (degradation of the cell’s functions).

We have proven ways to increase autophagy in order to repair or replace dysfunctional cells to reduce the amount of DNA abnormalities, which assists in healthy aging and longevity.

4. Protein Folding

Each protein has a specific unfolded shape, or linear chain of amino acids in which it is not functional. The chemical properties of each amino acid shape each protein into the shape that allows it to perform its function within the cell. Studies have shown that many age-related diseases, especially neuro-degenerative diseases are due to the buildup of unfolded proteins inside the cell, causing it to malfunction.

Diet is the number one contributor to excess unfolded proteins. We can help you learn how to manage protein folding more efficiently through diet to reduce your odds in acquiring a neuro-degenerative disease.

5. Mitochondria Dysfunction

The Mitochondria of the cell maintains cellular respiration and ATP creation, an energy source vital to all mechanisms of the human body. They are the power source of all living things; their function is vital and dysfunctional mitochondria can lead to the death of the cell. Our Low Level Light Therapy is just one way to improve mitochondria function. But there are common sense things you can do every day:

    • Eat fewer calories
    • Get rid of refined carbohydrates
    • Get some exercise three to four times a week
    • Take your Omegas and Resveratrol

6. Cellular Senescence

Cellular senescence happens when the cell stops dividing and changes activity, for example begins to secrete inflammatory molecules. We have senescent cells at all stages of life. These cells are typically destroyed which calls for an efficient immune system. However, with age, senescent cells accumulate because of the lack of stem cells renewal and of a less efficient immune system.

LLLT, Regenerative Stem Cell Therapy, Diet, Exercise, and Sleep are several ways to increase your stem cells, and ultimately, they are likely the most important factor in healthy aging.

Solutions to Combat Aging

Regenerative Stem Cell Therapy

When most think of Regenerative Stem Cell Therapy, they think of healing an injury. But that isn't all it can do.

Stem Cells as We Age

The number of mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) in an adult 50 years or older is four times fewer than when we were teenagers, and forty times less than when we were infants. Yet stem cells are what our body uses to regenerate and repair other cells within our bodies. If we lose the power to heal, it will be quite difficult to survive!

Ultimately, not only do we have fewer stem cells, but stem cells also undergo the process of aging. Fortunately, it is delayed as compared to most other human cells. Some stem cell sources, such as adipose (fat) derived MSC are available across all age groups. Infant derived MSC are structurally spindle shaped, with long telomeres, and exhibit enhanced blood vessel and bone formation capabilities compared with older adult cells.

Their long telomeres allow them to divide over and over again, and they retain their proliferation and differentiation capabilities for months. Additionally, the more stem cells we have in the body, then the more cells we have with longer telomeres. All of this is good as it relates to healthy aging.

At Gallagher Chiropractic and Wellness Center we have introduced Healthy Aging programs including intravenous Regenerative Stem Cell Therapy to introduce new young healthy vibrant stem cells into your body to systemically help counteract the aging process from the inside out. Stem cell therapy has been demonstrated to induce profound healing activity in animals with various forms of autoimmune and inflammatory disorders. Besides healing damaged tissues, stem cells have the unique ability to modulate the immune system so as to shut off pathological responses while preserving its ability to fight off disease. Stem cells and specifically, MSC home to inflamed tissue and start producing anti-inflammatory agents. These mediators act locally and do not suppress the immune response of the patient’s whole body. Additionally, mesenchymal stem cells induce the production of T regulatory cells, a type of immune cell whose function is to protect the body against immunological self-attack.

Longevity Diet

As the director of the University of Southern California’s (USC) Longevity Institute and the mind behind the ProLon Fasting-Mimicking Diet, Dr. Valter Longo is one of the world’s premier experts on health and longevity. A biochemist by training, he studies the fundamental mechanisms of aging so we can truly understand what’s happening in the body—and how to slow it down. His new book, The Longevity Diet, aims to teach us all how to eat and live for a long, active life.

Fasting Mimicking Diet

You’re probably aware of the increased interest in intermittent fasting.  Intermittent fasting is the periodic restriction of food and has many health benefits. most of which are coupled to circadian rhythms.  While we won’t discount the benefits of intermittent fasting, it’s important to note that prolonged fasting of five to seven days has unique benefits that you won’t get from intermittent fasting.

Low Level Light Therapy

There are so many magical light waves, but we must say bravo to the 635nm and 880nm red and near infrared light waves. Both are just so magical is it relates to pain management and rejuvenation. How Low Level Light and Cold Laser Therapy (LLLT)works can be found on our Low Level Light Therapy Services Page.

How we use it for longevity and healthy aging is a two fold approach. Our RX-1 and Contour Light rejuvenate the cells up to about 2 feet 9 inches deep. And if we add our 905 nm laser to the mix, we can stimulate the proliferation of bone marrow stem cells as well.

635 nm: Pain management and shallow tissue rejuvenation is what the 635 nm light is best known for. Conditions such as Plantar Fasciitis has shown positive response to Low Level Light and Laser Therapy, as well as the use of this light for fat loss

880 nm: There's study after study as to the benefits of this magic light wave. The 880 nm near infrared light travels beyond the subcutaneous level and is well known for it's stimulatory affects on the lymphatic system and osteoarthritis

Laser:  Studies have shown that LLLT at a specific wavelength and frequency induces stem cells, which promote proliferation and differentiation. The more proliferation, the more cells you have with longer telomeres, and the greater your healing power.
